Distracted driving is on the rise in Orlando, it is one of the leading causes of auto accidents and related fatalities in Central Florida.
What is distracted driving? Any distraction that takes your eyes or mind off driving, or something that takes your hand of the steering wheel. It could be texting, which requires all three distractions, which makes it so dangerous.
But there other causes for distracted driving such as, tending to children or pets, paying attention to something going on outside instead of the road, conversing with checking the GPS, adjusting the radio, or even daydreaming.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as a result of distracted driving there is an auto accident every minute and nearly nine fatalities every day! Their statistics suggest 78% of young adults admit to read text messages while driving and 71% admit to writing and sending a text message while driving.
Here in Florida, last year distracted drivers were responsive for over 45,000 car crashes and 214 deaths.
“Technically, Florida does have a ban on texting and driving. But, unlike those other 42 states, it’s what’s called a “secondary offense,” meaning cops can’t stop drivers unless the officers see the drivers committing some other infraction,” Orlando Sentinel.
